World War II veteran Don Tuthill, 90, survived 22 days in an open boat with 19 other men after the Liberty ship in which he was being transported sank when it was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean by a German U-boat. "When the first torpedo hit, I was in the top bunk and slid off," he said. "Shortly after, the second torpedo hit and that blew me up into the air. I ended up next to the engine room." With water filling the lower deck of the ship, Tuthill swam in the dark until he found a ladder. "I think I was probably the last person out from down there. I heard one person down there, and he was reciting the Lord's prayer."
